An exclusive lead is an enquiry delivered to one business only. A shared lead is the same enquiry sold to three to five businesses at once. Both might cost $30. They are not remotely the same product.
The numbers that matter
| Exclusive | Shared | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per lead | $45 | $25 |
| Typical close rate | 45% | 15% |
| Cost per booked job | $100 | $167 |
| Price pressure | Low | High |
| Customer owned by | You | The platform |
| Reviews and referrals | Yours | Often the platform's |
The cheaper lead is the more expensive job. And the gap widens once you factor in the discount you had to offer to win a quote you were bidding on against four competitors.
Why shared leads close so poorly
- The customer is expecting multiple calls, so your call isn't special
- The conversation starts with price, not with the problem
- The first responder wins disproportionately — and it's often not you
- The customer never saw your brand, reviews or work before the call
- Repeat work and referrals frequently flow back to the platform, not to you
How to tell if a lead source is truly exclusive
- 1Who owns the ad account?
If you can't log in and see it, it isn't yours.
- 2Whose phone number is on the ad?
A tracked number routing to you is fine. A platform's number is not.
- 3What happens if you leave?
You should keep the account, the data and the landing pages.
- 4Do they work with your competitors?
Ask directly whether they run another business in your trade and city.
